One of the thrust research areas at the Biothermal Technology Laboratory is cryosurgery, which is the destruction of undesired biological tissues by freezing. In order to gain better control over the cryoprocedure-thereby improving the outcome of the cryotreatment he has developed both devices and techniques for cryosurgery. He is currently leading an interdisciplinary research team focusing on improving the outcome of cryosurgery, where recent efforts are directed towards computerized planning of the cryoprocedure and computer-based training of the cryosurgeon. He has developed a new area of research, combining mathematical modeling and experimental investigation of physical properties in cryogenic temperatures, in order to quantify the effects of thermo-mechanical stress resulting from freezing. Thermo-mechanical stress is one of the key effects in tissue injury, which is associated with both cryosurgery and cryopreservation. When the stress level becomes too high, structural damage occurs in the tissue at various levels, with fracture formation a frequently observed outcome. In cryosurgery, fracture formation may lead to excessive bleeding to the thermally-treated tissue, which may result in clinical complications. In cryopreservation, fracture formation may prevent the preserved tissue from recovering. In either application, fracture can develop at the micro and/or the macro levels. He is leading an interdisciplinary research team, including experts from the fields of solid mechanics and cryobiology, to develop new models to describe thermal stress in glass-forming biomaterials, where glass formation ( also known as "vitrification" ) is an emerging alternative to classical cryopreservation.
