Professional Summary: This Ph.D. is a long-time music-industry veteran with extensive experience in all aspects of music technology, including software and hardware development, performing, composing, writing, and education. He is a classically-trained instrumentalist who has also played jazz, folk, pop, and experimental music professionally since the 1960s. Currently the Director of the Music Engineering program at a prominent University, which he helped create, his scholarly research has focused on the history of electronic music and automated instruments, as well as the use of "alternative" controllers in electronic music performance. He has served as an executive director of the MIDI Manufacturers Association and is recognized as a top expert on the MIDI specification, as well as other digital audio formats. He developed the first sampling/resynthesis software for a personal computer, and the first graphic-oriented MIDI sequencer for the Apple Macintosh. He has served as a consultant for most of the major players in music creation and delivery software and hardware, and has written user manuals for many groundbreaking products in the industry. He has written over 500 articles on music and audio technology, and over a 25-year period was a columnist for three of the most respected magazines in the professional recording and musical instrument spaces. An educator at the college level for over 25 years, he is known as an erudite and witty speaker for audiences of up to several thousand engineers and lay persons. |
