This Ph.D has over thirty-years of broad expertise in microbiology, anti-infectives and drug discovery.  He retired from his position as Senior Vice President of Anti-Infectives and Drug Discovery at GlaxoSmithKline ( GSK ), where he also served as Senior Vice President of Worldwide Biopharmaceutical Research and Development. There he led the anti-infectives franchise that placed the company in a leading position in that area of research and played a key role in developing new formulations for Augmentin and Bactriban, a new quinolone antibiotic gemifloxacin ( Factive ) and the commercialized recombinant Hepatitis B vaccine, Engerix-B.

Previously, He spent 10 years at the National Institutes of Health, advancing to Section Chief in The Laboratory of Biochemistry at the National Cancer Institute. He was formerly a principal investigator for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and was awarded a grant to study biothreat pathogen countermeasures. He served as a member of the Food and Drug Administration Science Board for the past three years, and has been a member of the executive council for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He also serves on the editorial boards of numerous international scientific journals.

He has received several prestigious awards, including the Arthur S. Fleming Award for his achievements in the field of microbial gene regulation, the Panlab Award for his work in the areas of microbiology and biotechnology and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Purdue University.  He holds adjunct professorships in three major Universities.  He obtained his Ph.D. from Purdue University and received post-doctoral training at Yale University Medical School.  He has published more than 200 papers and is a named inventor on nearly 60 issued patents.
