From 1970 through 2005, this Ph.D. was on the faculty at RPI, a Professor in the Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering Department with teaching and research activities in the areas of semiconductor devices, microwave/RF circuit design and integrated circuit (IC) interconnect technology.  He has published more than 400 refereed papers in journals and international conference digests, presented more than thirty invited talks at professional conferences and is a Fellow of the IEEE for contributions in microwave semiconductor technology.  He has coauthored three books on IC  interconnects, including the first books focused on chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) and copper metallization, and co-edited a recent book on three-dimensional (3D) IC processing.  Recent research activities include 3D IC platforms (both process technology and circuit design), copper damascene patterning, CMP, thermophotovoltaic (TPV) devices, silicon carbide (SiC) power devices and material characterization using microwave photoconductivity decay (M-PCD).

From 1962 to 1966 he was at a major electronics company, working on microwave components for phased array radars.  From 1981 to 1983 he was Program Director at the National Science Foundation (NSF), with responsibility for university grants in solid state and microstructures engineering and the National Nanofabrication Facility (NNF).  From 1989 to 1994 he was the Director of the Center for Integrated Electronics and responsible for the Microfabrication Clean Room and research programs in IC interconnects.  He has served on the University Advisory Boards at both SEMATECH and the SRC and received the RPI William H. Wiley Distinguished Faculty Award in 2000.

As Professor Emeritus since 2006, his research has emphasized unique IC designs enabled by 3D integration.  He serves as a consultant and expert witness, in areas of integrated circuit processing, semiconductor devices and IC component design.  He has recently testified before the International Trade Commission (ITC) and has been deposed for both plaintiffs and defendants.

After receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1988, he joined AT&T Bell Laboratories in the Network Research Department where he pursued research on wireless communications, mobility management, fast protocols, optical networks, and optical switching. From September 1994 until July 1995, he worked for the AT&T Wireless Center of Excellence, investigating various aspects of wireless and mobile networking, concentrating on TCP/IP networks.  Since, August 1995, this Ph.D. has been a member of the faculty of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell University, where he is now a Full Professor.

This Ph.D. has over 30 years of experience in semiconductor devices and integrated circuit technology and research.  While at Stanford University he led the development of the SUPREM process simulator, the first computer aided design tool focused on silicon  semiconductor devices and integrated circuit technology.  Derivatives of this program are still in widespread use in the semiconductor industry today.  In subsequent years, he made several significant contributions to the physical understanding and modeling of semiconductor fabrication processes such as dopant diffusion.  His current research focuses on the physics and technology of advanced nanoscale electronic devices with novel materials and structures.

He has made seminal contributions to the understanding of point defect mechanisms in atomic diffusion in silicon, a key process in the fabrication of electronic devices.  In the late 70's, he pioneered experimental methods that led to the first proof and subsequent quantitative characterization of the dual, vacancy - interstitialcy diffusion mechanisms of common dopant atoms in silicon. Then, in the early 80's he pioneered experimental field-effect nanostructures that became the basis for many investigations jointly with colleagues and students at MIT, of quantum effects in electron transport in ultra-small silicon and III-V field effect devices. Several firsts, including lateral surface superlattice, quasi-one dimensional density of states, and single-electron transistor demonstrations resulted from this work.  In parallel he led research that in 1985 resulted in sub-100-nm MOSFETs and the first demonstration of source to channel electron injection velocities exceeding the saturation velocity.  This early work along with his subsequent studies of highly non-uniform channel doping, and more recent experimental studies of Silicon on Insulator transistors have contributed to the groundwork for today's high performance silicon MOSFETs.
